The Original Gino's East
633 N. Wells St.
Chicago, IL 60610
312-943-1124
Zagat rating:
F23 D13 S14
Cuisine:
Pizza
Synopsis:
Entirely unlike any imitation Chicago deep dish pizza, the real thing took 45 minutes to cook (even though Connell and I were two of the first people there) and featured a half inch of bread, an inch deep of cheese, another half inch of sauce, and some of the freshest ingredients I've ever tasted in a pizza.  The final product resembled soup more so than it resembled your traditional pizza, with utensils definitely required for consumption.  While not the best pizza ever (as I might have expected), Gino's original Chicago pizza deserves a solid 4 of 5.

What we ordered:
Aditya had:
- garlic something soup
- salad with goat cheese and tomatoes
- "the best risotto I've ever had"
- Mme. Angèle’s Gateau Basque (dense almond torte filled with a layer of custard) cream

I had:
- "salmon with potatoes and the best slices of carrot I've ever had"

- Hazelnut & roasted almond mousse cake (layers of hazelnut mousse and genoise topped with roasted almonds)

All in all, my second-most expensive dinner ever... but definitely worth it!
